The Synthetic Diamond

Given both the rarity of the stone and its extreme hardness, scientists have sought to synthesize it. Objective: exploit its properties for industrial applications such as cutting, grinding, polishing or even engraving. More recently, diamonds have entered the world of biotechnology (medical imaging, temperature measurement, etc.).
Several techniques are used today to synthesize diamonds:
The "high pressure, high temperature" technique. Basically, a mixture of carbon and transition metals serves as catalysts for the reaction.
The technique of “chemical vapor deposition”. It allows the diamond to be created in successive layers.

A synthetic diamond is a diamond. It has the same physical, optical and chemical properties as mine diamond.

What is its difference with a mine diamond ?

ts "Origin. The diamond mine comes from the bowels of the Earth, while the synthetic diamond is created by man in the laboratory. A synthetic diamond is a diamond. It is impossible to differentiate between a natural diamond and a synthetic diamond, with the naked eye, with a magnifying glass or even under a microscope.

Why is it called synthetic diamond ?

Its name is defined by decree 2002-65 of January 14, 2002. It is the legal and compulsory name. All other terms such as "cultured diamond" or "laboratory diamond" are prohibited.

Sanctions

Deceptive commercial practices, like aggressive commercial practices, constitute unfair commercial practices prohibited by article L.120-1 CC and sanctioned by the DGCCRF
As part of our obligation of pre-contractual information, that is to say before any purchase or provision of service we must, as a professional, warn you of the difference between mine diamond and synthetic diamond. All documents (advertisements, invoices, certificates of authenticity, quotes, catalogs, etc.) must bear the exact name: synthetic diamond.

Is synthetic diamond ethical compared to mine diamond ?

Natural diamond industries have often been criticized for the socio-economic and environmental impact of large-scale mining. The practices of the diamond mining industry are more and more ethical, responsible and transparent: they follow ecological standards, reduce their impact on the environment, working conditions and remuneration improve and the traceability of diamonds becomes Standard
(cf. Kimberley Process).
But even mined in a state of the art (especially in Canada), diamond mines are still perceived as an ecological "nightmare".
In this sense, the synthetic diamond produced in the laboratory by qualified personnel and with perfect traceability, is considered and perceived today more responsible.

Is synthetic diamond ecological ?

"It has been established that greenhouse gas emissions are higher for a carat of synthetic diamond than for a carat of natural diamond, because production is extremely greedy for electricity."
Jean-Marc Lieberherr - Managing Director of the Diamond Producers Association
It should be noted, however, that more and more, producers located mainly in the United States, are equipping themselves with renewable energy installations.

Colored diamonds don't exist

They exist naturally. Natural colored diamonds are rare and their price per carat can reach up to 50 times that of a colorless diamond.

Take care of your Synthetic Diamond

Thorough cleaning with water and washing-up liquid, followed by rinsing with hot water, is generally enough to maintain your gem. If dirt has crept under the set stone, you can boil it in water with a drop of dish soap and a few more bleach. Diamonds are shock resistant: their hardness means that they are difficult to scratch, but they are not unbreakable.
